More notable movies not available online: filmmaker and critic picks

When filmmakers and film critics list their favorite movies, cinema fans often want to check out those flicks for themselves. But in some cases, those movies are not available online for streaming, digital purchase, or rental, according to Reelgood.
For instance, five of the favorite movies of director Paul Thomas Anderson are not available online. They are “The Dark Corner” (1946), “Melvin and Howard” (1980), “Nightmare Alley” (1947), “Sid & Nancy” (1986) and “The Complete Jacques Tati.”
Two of the 11 favorite films of director Wes Anderson are not available online. They are “Station Six-Sahara” (1962) and “What Price Hollywood?” (1932).
Two of the 26 favorite films of director David Fincher are not available online. They are “All That Jazz” (1979) and “Zelig” (1983).
One of the 30 favorite films of the Coen Brothers is not available online: “A Global Affair” (1964).
And director Ridley Scott named “On the Beach” (1959) as a sci-fi classic that had a major influence on him. Unfortunately, it’s not currently available online.
Finally, British film critic Mark Kermode recommended 50 essential masterpieces for film fans. But 11 of those movies are not available online in the U.S. Those movies are:
  • Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974)
  • Face (1997)
  • Immoral Tales (1973)
  • The Ipcress File (1965)
  • A Matter of Life and Death (1946)
  • Ordet (1955)
  • Radio On (1979)
  • Symptoms (1974)
  • That Sinking Feeling (1979)
  • Underground (1928)
  • La vallée (1972), aka Obscured by Clouds

7 movies recommended by Quentin Tarantino are not available online

Recently I wrote that a sizable percentage of acclaimed movie musicals and film noirs are not available online. That includes via streaming, digital purchase and online rental.
A lot of exploitation and genre flicks also are hard to find, including favorites of director Quentin Tarantino.
Six of Tarantino’s top 20 exploitation films are currently not available online. Plus, one of his favorite films from 1992 to 2009 is not available. That’s based on a search of the Reelgood database.
What follows is a list of those Tarantino favorites that are not available in any form online today.

The Blade (1995)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
The Girl from Starship Venus, aka The Sexplorer (1975)
The Mack (1973)
The Pom Pom Girls (1976)
The Savage Seven (1968)
Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1974)

15% of top film noir titles are not available online

Last November, Paste Magazine compiled a list of the 100 best film noirs of all time.
According to data from streaming service search engine Reelgood, 15 of those movies are not available for streaming, digital purchase, or online rental.
Coincidentally that matches the 15% unavailable rate of top movie musicals.
This just shows that we are far from the nirvana of every movie ever made being available on the internet.

Notable film noirs not available online

Angel Face (1953)
Angels With Dirty Faces (1938)
Journey Into Fear (1943)
Kiss Me Deadly (1955)

15% of top movie musicals are not available online

If you wanted to watch the 180 films that make up the nominees for the American Film Institute’s Greatest Movie Musicals, you would have a tough time finding some of them.
According to data from streaming service search engine Reelgood, 28 of those movies are not available for streaming, digital purchase, or online rental. That’s 15% of the total nominated films. So, tough luck, cinema fans.
On a positive note, six of those missing movies are listed as available on Netflix’s legacy DVD-by-mail service. But those discs often come with long wait times.
Also, 67 titles on the AFI list, or 37% of the total, are only available for digital purchase or rental. Those charges would add up fast.
The remainder are split across more than a dozen subscription streaming services. HBO Max has the most with 25 titles, followed by Disney+ with 19. Amazon Prime Video carries nine titles and Criterion has seven. Netflix, the largest subscription streaming service, only has two of the movies, as it prioritizes original programming over licensed content.
The AFI announced those 180 films in 2006 in its official ballot to members. The group eventually chose its 25 greatest movie musicals.
What follows is a list of the 28 top movie musicals that are not available for streaming, digital purchase, or online rental. They are locked in studio vaults.

Halls of fame for sports media pros, political consultants, jewelry retailers

Not every hall of fame has a physical building you can visit. Some only exist online.
I’ve previously discussed virtual halls of fame for accounting, barbecue, Hooters girls, hot sauce, pizza restaurants, toys and many more.
What follows are some more virtual halls of fame I’ve seen recently.

National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame

The National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame inducts sportscasters and sportswriters each year. Recent inductees include Jim Nantz, Dick Stockton and Dan Patrick.

American Association of Political Consultants Hall of Fame

The American Association of Political Consultants inducts individuals into its hall of fame for their leadership, longevity, and accomplishment in the profession. The most recent class of inductees into the AAPC Hall of Fame included Haley Barbour, former governor of Mississippi and Republican Party leader.

Jewelry Retailer Hall of Fame

Trade publication National Jeweler inducts jewelers into its Retailer Hall of Fame. It picks single-store and multi-store jewelers for the honor. The publication announced its 2022 Jewelry Retailer Hall of Fame inductees earlier this month.

Lottery Industry Hall of Fame

The Public Gaming Research Institute established the Lottery Industry Hall of Fame in 2005. It honors outstanding people in the world lottery industry.

Process Automation Hall of Fame

Trade publication Control selects inductees into the Process Automation Hall of Fame. It honors outstanding individuals in the process automation industry.

Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame

The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame considered building a brick-and-mortar museum but the venture proved to be cost prohibitive. So it is creating a virtual museum to honor the state's athletes and coaches in its hall.

Newest physical halls of fame open for sailing, baking, comic-book characters

With the world finally opening after the Covid-19 pandemic, so too are museums. That includes those with halls of fame.
On May 10, the Sailing Museum opened its doors in downtown Newport, Rhode Island. The pandemic had delayed the opening. The museum contains the National Sailing Hall of Fame and the America’s Cup Hall of Fame.
The previous week, on May 6, the Comic-Con Museum officially opened in San Diego’s Balboa Park. The museum had its soft opening starting in late November. It celebrates the fantastic worlds of comic books, movies, TV shows and more.
One exhibit area is the Comic-Con Museum Character Hall Of Fame. This year’s inductee is Spider-Man. The superhero joins previous inductees Batman, Pac-Man and Wonder Woman.
In late 2020, the Bundy Baking Museum in Urbana, Ohio, became the new home for the American Society of Baking’s Baking Hall of Fame. The Bundy Baking Museum is located at the Bundy Baking Solutions headquarters. However, the museum is open only to baking industry professionals by appointment.
The number of physical halls of fame for professions, passions and pursuits in North America now totals 487. (Check out this Google Map for a comprehensive list of physical halls of fame.)
Other physical halls of fame are in the works.
The National Native American Hall of Fame plans to open at exhibit at the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City, Okla. It is due to open in November.
The American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame is scheduled to open in April 2023 in High Point, N.C. The hall will serve as a showcase for the home furnishings industry and will include exhibits and memorabilia.

iHeartRadio should revive the Dance Music Hall of Fame

There are halls of fame for rock and roll, country, gospel, blues, bluegrass and other music styles, but there’s no hall of fame for dance music. That includes disco and electronic dance music (EDM).
There was a short-lived Dance Music Hall of Fame, which held just two rounds of introductions in 2004 and 2005. It honored artists, records, producers, DJs and remixers. The organization inducted just six artists before it went inactive: Chic, Sylvester, Gloria Gaynor, Bee Gees, Donna Summer, and Barry White.
I suggest that iHeartRadio acquire the rights to the Dance Music Hall of Fame and resurrect it. It would be a good fit for the company’s Pride Radio. IHeartRadio already puts on a bunch of concerts throughout the year, including festivals and awards shows. This would be a good addition.
If acquiring the rights to the Dance Music Hall of Fame is too difficult, an organization could create the Electronic Dance Music Hall of Fame and consider artists from the Disco era as “early influencers.”
I’d love to see a reputable hall honor dance music artists that wouldn’t get recognition elsewhere. I’d like to see artists inducted like Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Daft Punk, Ace of Base, Martha Wash, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Avicii, Calvin Harris and more.
Other individuals have created halls of fame online, but they don’t have prestige. These include the U.S. Dance Music Hall of Fame, the International Electronic Dance Music Hall of Fame, and the Disco Hall of Fame.

‘Chilling historical photos’ that aren’t, courtesy of lying clickbait

Promoters of lying clickbait often hype “chilling,” “creepy” or “brutal” historical photos with pictures that aren’t.
One recent clickbait promotion from Past Chronicles promised “Chilling historical photos.” It said, “Warning, these rarely seen photos are not suitable for all audiences.” But it used a photo from a catalog of bridal dresses from the Justin Alexander Spring 2016 collection. Not very historical or chilling for that matter. (See Strictly Weddings website.)

Another promotion from Past Chronicles with the same title used a photo of Playboy Playmate Louann Fernald from 1979. Nothing “chilling” here unless you count the temperature when the Playboy photographer shot this car-wash pictorial.

A promoted tweet by JourneyRanger on Twitter touted “Never seen before Wild West photos.” But the two photos used were modern-day photos made to look old.
The left photo is by Russian photographer Dmitry Rubinshteyn and the right photo is of model Denyce Lawton.

Another clickbait article titled “Brutal Wild West images” by Bonvoyaged.com used a photo by French photographer Robert Doisneau. He was known for his Paris street life photos from the 1930s through 1960s. Not exactly the Wild West.

This next one is a bit of a mystery. A sponsored link by MoneyWise.com titled “30 defunct restaurant chains that Americans don’t miss” used a photo from a restaurant that I certainly would miss. It shows nine pretty, young women in short skirts and chef hats working in an industrial-style bakery.
The image is available as a stock photo from the Everett Collection, which started as a collection of stills from old movies. None of the stock photo services have details on the photo and whether it is from a movie. The ladies look like they’re from a chorus line in a Busby Berkeley musical.
Another photo in the same collection shows three women with large bowls of doughnuts.
If you know when this photo was taken (1930s perhaps?) and for what purpose, let me know.

Finally, a bonus clickbait article uses the tactic of misidentifying a celebrity’s age to draw attention. A recent promoted article was titled “Angie Dickinson is turning 100. This is her now.” Dickinson is 90.

FANG stocks defanged by Meta Platforms ticker change

With Facebook parent Meta Platforms changing its ticker to META from FB on Thursday, the FANG group of top internet stocks loses more relevance. Will talk of FANG stocks wither after the change? Will a new stock group emerge to define the next growth era?
CNBC’s “Mad Money” host Jim Cramer coined the term FANG stocks in 2013 to refer to the group of leading internet companies: Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google.
The FANG stocks group persisted after Google was placed under umbrella organization Alphabet in 2015. But Alphabet retained its GOOG and GOOGL tickers, allowing the acronym to continue.
Certainly, many Wall Street analysts and investors will continue to use the FANG acronym despite the change. The same is true for its many variants: FAANG (which adds Apple to the mix), FATMAN or FAATMAN (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Tesla, Microsoft, Alphabet and Netflix), FANMAG (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, Microsoft, Apple and Google). There’s also FANGMAN (which adds Nvidia).
Cramer suggested MAMAA (Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet) as a replacement, though others have stylized it as AMAMA.
Others have played around with acronyms with the companies Apple, Amazon, Alphabet (or Google), Meta, Microsoft, Netflix and Tesla. They’ve come up with GAMMA, MANGA, MAGMA, MANTA and A MANTA.
China’s version of FANG stocks is the BAT stocks. BAT includes internet companies Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent. There’s also BAIT, which adds iQiyi.
With FANG stocks defanged by Facebook and Google name changes, what stock group will define the next growth era?
In March, BofA Securities analyst Vivek Arya created a grouping of top semiconductor stocks under the acronym MANGO. The MANGO stocks include Marvell Technology (MRVL), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Analog Devices (ADI), Broadcom (AVGO), Nvidia (NVDA), GlobalFoundries (GFS) and Onsemi (ON). Arya combined the three tickers that start with A as one letter in the acronym. It looks better than MAAANGO.

Actress in Sean Paul music video identified as model Gabriela Salvadó

One of the most consistently popular posts on Tech-media-tainment over the years has been one titled “Who is the hot actress in Sean Paul’s ‘She Doesn’t Mind’ music video?
Several people have since confirmed to Tech-media-tainment that the actress in question is New York City-based model Gabriela Salvadó. The international model is originally from Guatemala.
The producers of the music video inadvertently created the mystery by not crediting Salvadó in the footnotes for Sean Paul’s “She Doesn’t Mind” video on YouTube. By contrast, model Lisa Jackson got credited elsewhere for her role in the 2011 video, which has over 470 million views on YouTube.
It’s too bad the mystery took several years to solve.
Check out more about the lovely Gabriela Salvadó on Facebook and Instagram.

Former Lingerie Football League gets woke

Women’s football league X League kicks off its first season on Friday June 10 in Independence, Missouri. But the league actually has been around since 2009 when it got its start as the sexy Lingerie Football League.
Back then, the women played in bras and panties with minimal athletic protection. They wore shoulder pads and hockey helmets plus knee and elbow pads. But they still showed a lot of bare skin. Naturally there were numerous “wardrobe malfunctions.”
The league inspired other sexy women’s sports leagues including the Bikini Basketball League, Lingerie Basketball League, Bikini Hockey League and Lingerie Fighting Championships. But it was a short-lived phenomenon.
In 2013, the Lingerie Football League rebranded as the Legends Football League. With the rebrand, the uniforms became more sports appropriate. So, no more wardrobe malfunctions.
The recent change to the X League is the second rebranding of the Lingerie Football League. It’s trying to become a legitimate sport now. That means no more cleavage-baring outfits.
Frankly, I’m surprised the league has lasted this long.
