15% of top movie musicals are not available online

If you wanted to watch the 180 films that make up the nominees for the American Film Institute’s Greatest Movie Musicals, you would have a tough time finding some of them.
According to data from streaming service search engine Reelgood, 28 of those movies are not available for streaming, digital purchase, or online rental. That’s 15% of the total nominated films. So, tough luck, cinema fans.
On a positive note, six of those missing movies are listed as available on Netflix’s legacy DVD-by-mail service. But those discs often come with long wait times.
Also, 67 titles on the AFI list, or 37% of the total, are only available for digital purchase or rental. Those charges would add up fast.
The remainder are split across more than a dozen subscription streaming services. HBO Max has the most with 25 titles, followed by Disney+ with 19. Amazon Prime Video carries nine titles and Criterion has seven. Netflix, the largest subscription streaming service, only has two of the movies, as it prioritizes original programming over licensed content.
The AFI announced those 180 films in 2006 in its official ballot to members. The group eventually chose its 25 greatest movie musicals.
What follows is a list of the 28 top movie musicals that are not available for streaming, digital purchase, or online rental. They are locked in studio vaults.
