It’s been about a week since I finished binge-watching the first season of science-fiction series “Extinct” and I’m still thinking about it.
The best movies and TV shows stay with you after you watch them and “Extinct” fits the bill.
“Extinct” deals with big themes about morality and what it means to be human. All the while it engages audiences with a twisty plot and great action scenes.
“Extinct” takes place 400 years after the extinction of humanity from an alien invasion. The story begins with three humans who are mysteriously reborn as adults with memories of their prior lives intact. They must navigate a strange new world, combat an alien enemy and find answers to why they were brought back.
“Extinct” was co-created by Orson Scott Card, author of “Ender’s Game.” The pedigree shows because “Extinct” builds a deep and compelling mythology while it spins an exciting yarn.
The cast, led by Chad Michael Collins as Ezra, is uniformly good, but the show proves to be a star-making vehicle for Mathew Bellows, who plays main bad guy Jax. He commands your attention on screen.
“Extinct” makes great use of its filming locations in Utah, which can look pretty harsh, especially in the winter scenes.
The first season’s 10 episodes are available for free via streaming online and mobile and set-top box apps. I watched it on my Roku box after downloading the BYUtv app.
“Extinct” was produced by BYU Television, a channel operated and funded by Brigham Young University. Unfortunately a second season for “Extinct” has not yet been announced.
In the age of peak TV, good TV shows are spread out on broadcast and cable TV channels as well as streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, CBS All Access and others. Keeping track of all those services and finding good shows to watch can be a real hassle.
“Extinct” could get lost in the flood of TV shows if it’s not found and embraced by sci-fi TV fans.
It would be a shame if the story was not continued.
